Modi’s Punjab incident worsens political issues in India
On January 5, 2022, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi was stuck in a flyover in Punjab for around 20 minutes due to a number of farmers protesting against his government’s agriculture policies. As a result, Modi had to cancel all his engagements for the day and return to the airport. According to his government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the incident was clear proof of the infringement of the security of the prime minister. BJP then blamed the state government of Punjab for its security lapse.
From local news sources, Modi told officials at the Bathinda airport, ‘Thank your chief minister I was able to escape alive’. After this particular incident, the BJP went with a full-scale political campaign around the Punjab incident and mentioned that it was an intentional threat to the life of the prime minister.
To make matters worse, Union Minister Smriti Irani made a controversial statement saying that she was ‘happy with the breach in security’ since she ‘hates Modi’. In turn, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah discussed the issue on Twitter and claimed that Congress had deliberately overlooked the PM’s security.
On another hand, different BJP units across India along with chief ministers held public ceremonies to show that they are praying for Modi’s long life.
India holds state elections amidst the pandemic
Despite the second wave of coronavirus cases in India, the country’s stakes polls in four states and a union territory still continued. One of the most prominent events was the election in West Bengal where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was determined to overthrow the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Given the election period for the April-May polls of 2021, many politicians held public campaigns which resulted in big crowds and overlooked COVID protocols. After the results on May 2 of the same year were declared, a string of violent incidents occurred in the country. Most TMC candidates won the by-polls including Mamata Banerjee from the Bhanbanipur who held onto her chief minister position.
Apart from the previously mentioned incident, the other polls in the country were also proclaimed on the same day. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) headed by Pinayari Vijayan was re-elected in Kerala. As for Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was replaced by the incumbent Edappadi K Palaniswami’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Meanwhile, BJP-led alliances won in both Assam and Puducherry.
